TDRA Heads UAE Delegation at WSIS in Geneva

The Telecommunications & Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) led the UAE delegation which participated in the final week of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum, hosted by the Swiss city of Geneva under the title “ICTs for Well-Being, Inclusion and Resilience: WSIS Cooperation for Accelerating Progress on the SDGs”.

As a platinum partner of the Forum, the UAE was represented by a delegation comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health & Prevention, Emirates Health Services, Abu Dhabi Digital Authority, Abu Dhabi Agriculture & Food Safety Authority, Electronic Government Authority of Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman Digital Department, Department of Municipalities & Transport in Abu Dhabi, Integrated Transport Centre, and the Statistics Centre − Abu Dhabi.

The UAE delegation participated in high-level dialogue and interactive sessions. The UAE also organized two workshops in which members of the UAE delegation talk about the country's achievements in the area of ICT for Development (ICT4D), programs, initiatives and other ICT-related topics.

The UAE’s participation in this global event comes as part of the Forum’s significance as a platform for building and strengthening the concepts of partnership between various sectors in shouldering the burdens of the future and addressing its information technology-related challenges, where each successive session of the Forum represented a milestone on the path to the future.

For its part at the Forum, the delegation highlighted UAE's digital transformation journey, and stressed that the UAE has well-defined strategies to build an information society that enjoys sustainable development, well-being and happiness. As such, the UAE has launched strategies for the 4IR, AI, digital government and relevant emerging technologies. It has also launched an ambitious space program that places the UAE among the countries that invest in the exploration of Mars, the Moon and the like to serve the people of Earth.

During the course of the Forum, the UAE delegation participated in the ministerial roundtable on the progress of the Geneva Plan of Action (WSIS Action Lines) after 20 years of its launch, as well as on challenges still to be addressed. Participants also discussed national approaches in national development plans, which aim to enhance the role of ICT as an enabling factor for sustainable development.

The UAE delegation organized a workshop entitled "The Path to a Digital Nation", during which it addressed the UAE’s experience in accelerating its transformation into a truly digital country by providing key highlights of its ambitious goals and initiatives across different sectors. The workshop highlighted the digital government program, including the enablers for transitioning towards end-to-end digital service delivery. The workshop also touched on projects of government entities in the UAE, aimed at improving the use, integration and sharing of data across core systems, and ensuring business continuity through various projects and initiatives. In the same vein, TDRA, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Cooperation, the Department of Municipalities & Transport in Abu Dhabi, the Integrated Transport Centre and the Ajman Digital Authority reviewed their experiences related to the UAE digital government, educational system, infrastructure and digital transformation. The UAE also organized an awareness workshop on its achievements in health in the era of digital transformation.

The WSIS is a high-level international platform through which efforts are coordinated around the world in all matters relating to ICT and digital content. Today, the role played by the Forum is crucial in laying the common ground for shaping a transparent, well-defined global sector-wide vision.
