TRA Official Statement

09/11/2014

WITH REGARD TO RECENT MEDIA REPORTS ABOUT DIGITAL DRUGS, THE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) WISHES TO CLARIFY THE FOLLOWING: FROM A TECHNICAL PERSPECTIVE, THE TRA CAN TAKE ACTION AGAINST ANY WEBSITE IN VIOLATION. HOWEVER, THOSE ACTIONS SHOULD COME AS A RESULT OF RECOMMENDATIONS OR PROVISIONS ISSUED BY AUTHORIEZED BODY IN THE TECHNICAL ASPECT OR JUDICIAL FRONT.

Accordingly, the TRA initiated communication with relevant government entities, confirming that they will not hesitate to follow the necessary procedures in line with the UAE law on violating websites, if requested to do so by authorized bodies.

The TRA also wishes to emphasize the responsibility of parents’ towards monitoring their children’s behavior online. It is essential for parents to identify the websites their children visit and observe any signs that call attention to the children’s conduct. Parents must inform the responsible authorities in the event of suspicious activity. Additionally, the TRA stresses the role of educational institutions in raising awareness among the youth.

TRA’s collaboration between the UAE Computer Emergency Response Team (aeCERT) and Ministry of Education resulted in the ministry developing syllabus on e-awareness and information security and including it as part of curriculum in public schools. The team constantly strives to update and remodel the curriculum to keep it up with the non-stop technological developments.
